Our Vetting Process

Keep Me Card has been trusted by local homeowners since 1983 because we do not put just anyone on the card. Every advertiser is reviewed before they appear — and standards are maintained throughout.

The Card Only Works If Homeowners Trust It

The Keep Me Card goes into local homes as a trusted reference. Homeowners keep it because they believe every business on it has been checked. That trust is the product. We protect it by not compromising on who we accept.

This benefits every advertiser. When a homeowner calls a number from the card, they call with a higher degree of trust than they would a random Google result. That makes the conversation easier, the close rate higher, and the relationship better from the first contact.

What Happens When You Apply

Every application goes through the same process regardless of trade or area. There are no shortcuts.

Application Received

You submit your application with your business details, trade category, and the area you are applying for. We confirm receipt and check area availability. If the slot is taken, we will tell you immediately and offer to add you to a waiting list.

Business Review

We review your business against our advertiser criteria. This includes checking that you are a legitimate, established trade business operating in the area you have applied for. We look at your trading history, any relevant trade body memberships, and your online reputation where available.

Reference and Reputation Check

We may request references from previous customers or check third-party review platforms to confirm consistent quality of work. For regulated trades such as gas engineers and electricians, we verify relevant certifications and registrations are current.

Approval and Onboarding

Once approved, we work with you to build your online profile and prepare your card listing. You review and approve your listing before anything goes live or goes to print. Nothing appears without your sign-off.

Annual Review

At each renewal, your listing is reviewed again. We are not simply processing a direct debit — we are re-confirming that you continue to meet our standards. Advertisers who receive complaints or whose standards drop are not automatically renewed.

What We Require

These are not aspirational guidelines. They are the minimum requirements for appearing on Keep Me Card.

Legitimate Business

You must be a properly established trade business operating in the area you apply for. Sole traders and limited companies are both accepted. We do not accept applications from businesses that cannot demonstrate a genuine trading presence in the local area.

Responsive and Reliable

The card is used for emergencies. Homeowners call expecting a response. We require that our advertisers are available to take calls and respond within a reasonable timeframe. Trades that consistently fail to respond put the card’s reputation at risk.

Relevant Qualifications

For regulated trades, current certification is mandatory. Gas Safe registration for heating engineers. NICEIC or equivalent for electricians. Relevant trade body membership where it applies. We verify these are current at application and renewal.

Good Reputation

We look at available evidence of your reputation before approving your application. A history of unresolved complaints or consistently poor reviews is grounds for rejection. We are not looking for perfection — we are looking for honest, professional tradespeople with a genuine track record.

Public Liability Insurance

All advertisers must hold adequate public liability insurance for their trade. We request confirmation of cover at the point of application. This is non-negotiable for any trade that enters a customer’s property.

Honest Trading

We expect our advertisers to quote honestly, charge fairly, and deal with customers with integrity. Evidence of misleading pricing, unnecessary upselling, or dishonest practices is grounds for removal from the card without refund.

How Standards Are Maintained

Being accepted onto the card is not a one-time event. Standards are maintained throughout the advertising relationship.

Complaint Handling

If a homeowner contacts us with a complaint about an advertiser, we take it seriously. Our process is:

  • We contact the advertiser directly and give them the opportunity to respond
  • We assess whether the complaint represents an isolated incident or a pattern
  • Unresolved complaints or patterns of poor service result in removal from the card
  • We do not act as arbitrators in commercial disputes, but we do protect homeowners from genuinely bad experiences

Annual Renewal Review

Every advertiser is reviewed at renewal. This is not automatic. At renewal we consider:

  • Any complaints received during the year
  • Whether qualifications and insurance remain current
  • Whether the business is still actively trading in the area
  • Whether the business has maintained the standards it was accepted on

Renewal is confirmation that you continue to meet our standards — not simply that your payment has been processed.

Questions About Vetting

The timeline depends on how quickly we can verify the information you provide and obtain any references. In most cases the review is completed within a few working days. If we need additional documentation from you, we will tell you clearly what is needed and why.
We will tell you that your application has been unsuccessful. In most cases we can give you an indication of why, though we reserve the right to decline without giving detailed reasons in all circumstances. You may reapply if the circumstances that led to the decision change.
Yes. Many of our longest-standing advertisers are sole traders. The legal structure of your business is not a factor in our decision. What matters is your trading history, reputation, and ability to meet the standards we require.
We will contact you to discuss the complaint and give you the opportunity to respond. A single complaint does not automatically result in removal. We look at the nature of the complaint, your response, and whether it forms part of a pattern. We handle these situations professionally and with fairness to both parties.
Yes. For all regulated trades we check that the relevant certifications are current at the time of application. Gas Safe registration is publicly searchable and we verify it directly. NICEIC, NAPIT, and equivalent electrical scheme memberships are verified in the same way. These checks are repeated at renewal.
